The problem is that they're not strong enough in their current states to have any real effect. The guardian and transporter go a short way in making long battles a bit more intresting as they give the commander an actual usefull thing to do once tech is up and most buildings are constructed. The only thing I miss from the good old days are it's simpler graphics and the amount of players actually ingame.
